Adams City High School
Standley Lake High School
The Adams City Eagles are one up and one down on the season to start off an exciting non league race of Plains League opponents of which 5 of the 6 teams are 1 – 1 after 2 weeks of play. The Eagles players, coaches, and fans are upbeat and highly confident about getting back on track against their next opponent Vista Peak next Friday Night at The A.
The visiting Adams City Eagles started the contest on a rather low note by digging themselves a hole early due to a slow start that resulted in two early touchdowns for Standley Lake in the opening 5 minutes of the 1st quarter. The first came on a poorly defended punt return for a TD followed by a second score just one possession later on a deep middle air strike. After settling in a bit Adams City allowed one final score just before the end of the 1st quarter to take the lead 21 – 0.
The Eagles appeared to have finally awaken at the start of the 2nd quarter with a stellar drive to produce their first score with a 60+ yard scoring strike from Jr. QB – Liban Shongolo to a familiar target in Jr. WR – Troy Martinez. Standley Lake would answer on the next possession to extend their lead 28 – 6 only to have the Eagles march down the field for their 2nd score of the night to make the game a more competitive contest. That score came on a short run by QB Liban Shongolo just a few plays after another 60 + yard pass to Sophomore RB – Isiah Richardson that landed the Eagles inside the 10 yard line. After a couple of back and forth non scoring possessions by both teams the Eagles experienced improved defensive success before allowing one final Standley Lake score on the half to give them a halftime lead of 35 – 12.
The 3rd quarter started out with what appeared to be yet another ball moving drive by Standley Lake until their early momentum was abruptly halted with a fumble that the Eagles were able to recover. The Eagles would then effectively move the ball down the field in methodical fashion to produce their third (short QB run) score of the game to narrow the gap and trail 35 – 18. With the apparent momentum on their side the Eagles would seize possession of the ball yet again with another opportunity to score only to fall short with a turnover that would give Standley Lake the ball to close out the third quarter and maintain their 35 – 18 advantage.
The 4th and final quarter saw a defensively dominated period in which both teams moved the ball shortly only to result in the exchanging of possessions without scores. The next score would come by way of a sustained drive in which Standley Lake was able to punch the ball in after secessive plays. The Eagles would knock on the door yet again on their next possession with a near score that saw an unaware Adams City receiver swat away a guaranteed TD bound ball away from a wide open Senior WR Carlos Barrera in the back of the end zone. That drive would end a few plays later with a couple of unsuccessful TD strike attempts that would give Standley Lake their final possession with just over two minutes remaining to seal the deal. The hard fought inspiring loss drops the Adams City Eagles to an even 1 – 1 record on the year with their next outing coming at home against 0 – 2 Vista Peak Prep Academy Friday Night September 15, 2017 @ 7:00 p.m at The A.
